How to improve my golf score?

Jeanine
im 13 normally shooting around a 85-89 on courses ive played here in texas. I alwayss make bogey or sometimes par. How do I start to get birdies? I have only got 1 ever. On the tee box I always think about getting par and how to do so, should I start to think of how to get birdies instead? Thanks!

The 1st thing you have to do is start working on your short game. Scoring starts there whether it's for an Eagle or a Triple Bogey. You have to learn to sink every 8 foot putt. One of the greatest teachers in the game told me 35 years ago to play for the pars and let the birdies take care of themselves. You can't get up to the tee and start thinking about a score. One stroke at a time. The tee shot sets up the approach shot. If you're thinking about a number then you're putting too much pressure on yourself. You can drop 6-8 strokes off your game by leaning how to get up and down from 50 yards. Every pitch and two putt is just like a 3 putt. Don't count your score. Maintain the same composure throughout the round. Know where to miss the shot. Don't tee off with the Driver if a 5 wood is the best play. If you're Driver isn't going well at 13 years of age then switch to a 3 wood. Forget about distance and start thinking about scoring. Know your game. Play with the same game you bring to the course. Don't try to work on your swing while at the course. When you are at number 7 hole and you're one over then don't think about it. It will happen and when you think about it you'll fall back. You can never make up a lost stroke.Keep your mind clear during the swing. Knowledge - Application - Feel & Judgment. These are the 4 bywords to a great swing and score.

Your mindset on the tee box is all wrong, the way I get birdies is by thinking about the shots not about my score. You think about where you want to hit your tee shot, visualize hitting it, put in the time to make it happen (i.e. on the range) and execute to the best of your ability and the birdies (and eagles from time to time) will start falling from everywhere
