Summer to go?Where do we stay? What courses should we play? What's the best yet economical way to enjoy it?Do you have to stay at there Lodge like at Pebble to get on some of the nicer courses and get preferred tee times and etc?

Most of the answers to these questions are subjective, but I'll try to help the best I can-Stasrting next week and lasting for about 4-6 weeks, the pollen will be miserable in the Phurst area- if any of your group has allergies, I would avoid that area until May. June is probably optimum, the temps are moderate, lots of daylight hours.Starting in July and August, it does get hot and muggy, and the sand flies can get bad. Also, the greenskeepers usually soak the courses overnight, so it will be sloppy and muddy and cartpath only until 10am or so.You can check out the Tobacco Road website and follow the links to Sandhills packages- there are a lot of options as far as room/golf goes. They can fix you up at a lot of other really good courses besides the 8 at the resort.Ft. Bragg, Tobacco Road, The Pit, Southern Pines and Tot Hill are all courses would recommend within an hour or less of the traffic circle in Phurst.No. 2 is obviously worth trying for, but be prepared to pay- I think it was 375$ as a non-resort guest last tme I looked, and maybe 240$ as a guest if you are staying there. You might do better as a walk-up, especially on a day where the weather is iffy- The resort itself is absolutely first class, and if you don't mind the price, it is worth it, but figure on 300-500/day, without greens fees. You can get a package n the area without the resort courses for about 80-120/day per person, including green fees and the usual mini breakfast. Most important, talk to one of the course pros in the area before you book anything- a lot of the courses will do aerations throughout the year, or get "the funk" (a fungal disease) on their greens, or have other issues. Most of the time, the admin person taking your reservation info won't know anything about this and try to "sell" you, but call one of the courses you'd like to play and talk to the pro, or get on their website and get in touch with the greenskeeper- they know what is going on at all of the neighboring courses. And lastly, check the local laws when you decide on lodging- some of the counties around Phurst are "dry" , and that might impact your trip.

Have fun-Youshould check out Tot Hill- they used to have a special on Weds, 29$ after 1pm to play until dark, and it included a cart- great course for the money.
